Watching lucid dreaming movies, or movies about dreaming in general, can help with the process of learning how to lucid dream. They can spark the imagination and help you think a little bit deeper about the details.

Lucid dreaming is the ability to become aware in, and possibly even control, your dreams. It is a skill that can be learned and you can have a lot of fun doing it.

An older Japanese film that is collection of shorter films. It covers a variety of topics and basically just shows really creative depictions of dreams. The dreams shown are inspired by real dreams.

A psychological thriller that will make you question your own sanity. I would have put this in the top five if it was more closely related to lucid dreaming.

Two agents visit a mental institution for the criminally insane to investigated a patient disappearance. It takes you on a wild mental roller coaster from there.

18. Minority Report

YEAR: 2002

STARRING: Tom Cruise

RATED: PG-13

IMDB RATING: 7.6

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 91%

A pre-crime unit is formed and starts arresting people before they commit their crimes. This crime unit gets names of criminals and the crime details from a few people who have precognitive abilities. 

Action packed, and has good reviews from critics.

17. Dreamscape

Based around the development of a dream therapy or research program. The main character can get into peoples dream to try and help them with issues they are facing.

It is an interesting watch, but doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in the end.

STARRING: Jake Gyllenhaal

IMDB RATING: 7.5

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 92%

The main character finds himself within a special program. It incorporates time travel and the transferring of his consciousness into another person.

With limited time, he experiences the the mission over and over on repeat. A good movie, worth the time to watch.

15. The Lovely Bones

STARRING: Mark Wahlberg, Saoirse Ronan

RATED: PG-13

IMDB RATING: 6.7

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 32%

This is a murder mystery but you know the killer the whole time. More related to the afterlife and search memories.

It has a lot of good actors, but many either love or hate the movie.

14. Paprika(Animated)

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 84%

This is a Japanese anime that is a psychological thriller. If you don’t mind the anime genre, this is definitely a recommended watch.

Very simply put, it is about the combination of technology and dreaming to help a person with real life problems.

13. Nightmare on Elm Street

STARRING: Johnny Depp, Heather

This movie depicts the dark side of the dreaming world. Freddy Krueger exists only in the dream world, and attacks when someone falls asleep. 

He attacks in dreams, but in reality as well. Remade in 2010 as well. This is the orignal but there are sequels and remakes.

I put this at eleven considering the 1990 version of the movie as well. This remake is probably not as good as it was with Arnold back in the day.

However, the basis is that the main character looks to a virtual vacation service where they implant memories of fantasy. Things get crazy after memories of him being a spy are implanted in his head.

10. Westworld (Series

YEAR: 2016-2019

MAIN STAR: Anthony Hopkins

RATED: TV-MA

IMDB RATING: 8.8

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 86%

A newer series, but a very interesting, remake of an old movie. It is about a old west themed park where people can live out their fantasies with the help of robots that are extremely human-like.

The series gets wilder as it goes on but it centers around these robots being able to gain human consciousness.

9. Avatar

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 82%

A must watch film, if you haven’t seen it. One of the highest grossing films of all time. Worth the watch just for the visuals alone.

A paraplegic man is offered the chance to experience a new reality through a marine mission and crazy technology. Things change once he enters this crazy new world with an “avatar” body and makes connections.

8. Anamnesis (Series)

YEAR: 2015

STARRING: N/A

RATED: NR

IMDB RATING: 7.2

A very popular series in the lucid dreaming world. This a kind of mystery series focus on a group of people who become connected in lucid dreams.

It is low budget but well written, and worth the watch.

7. Waking Life (Animated)

YEAR: 2001

STARRING: Ethan Hawke

RATED: R

IMDB RATING: 7.8

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 80%

If you don’t mind the weird animation, this one is interesting and highly rated. 

Looks into the questions – Can we control our dreams? – Do our dreams try to teach us?

Kind of hard to explain other than, it’s a deep continuous look into dreaming and philosophy.

6. The Good Night

MAIN STAR: Martin Freeman

RATED: R

IMDB RATING: 5.8

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 31%

Not very highly rated at all, but has direct reference to and info about lucid dreaming. A a man finds love but only can be with her in his dreams. 

He lets his love for dreams take over while is waking life spins out of control.

 

5. What Dreams May Come

Over 20 years old now, but it still can take your imagination for a spin. After dying and going heaven, Robin Williams demonstrates the power of belief in his dreams.

Kind of sad at times, but a very thought provoking take on the after life and perceived reality.

4. Vanilla Sky

YEAR: 2001

STARRING: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz

RATED: R

IMDB RATING: 6.9

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 42%

Tom Cruise, who plays David Aames Jr. struggles with new reality after living a spoiled dream life. 

After tragedy seemingly strikes, he deals with lucid dreams and hallucinations. Without giving too much way, this movie is entertaining and a little underrated.

3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

YEAR: 2004

STARRING: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet

RATED: R

A very highly rated, but maze of a love comedy. It is about a couple that breaks up and has a procedure to erase the memory of each other from their minds. 

In losing memories of love lost, Joel(Jim Carrey) rediscovers the passion that brought them together and tries to escape the crazy procedure. This movie explores the pains of joys and memories. 

2. The Matrix

ROTTEN TOMATOES: 88%

Keanu Reeves plays a hacker(Neo) that finds out he is living in a program created by machines. These machines tapped into human minds and created an illusion of reality.

A super popular trilogy of movies that provoke great thought about reality. Very weird but full of excitement.

A widely popular, riveting, and mind bending movie. A totally original and hard to predict movie. 

It goes through the battle of fighting through what is reality and what is a dream. It is a must watch, and really gives you some things to think about related to the architecture of dreams.
